iQhilika ("eesh-hill-ee-kah") is a fermented honey beverage that dates back 20,000 years -- produced within the Eastern Cape region of South Africa by the Xhosa people and descendants of the Khoi-San group of peoples who inhabit the region. Makana Meadery is an equitable, empowerment driven company with more than 50% owned and funded by previously disadvantaged individuals, and they are passionate about bringing this traditional beverage to your glsas. To make their "Chili" expression, the base mead is aged over roasted, indigenous African chili peppers which lends a spicy tickle to the palate. It is then matured for a period of 9 to 18 months in previously used red & white wine oak barrels from Thelema Mountain Vineyards in South Africa. Try this with rich savory dishes as well as dessert, or simply by itself after dinner.
